'Not All Men Are From Mars'
A Poetry Book for Women's Aid by Peter Wyton

Not All Men Are From Mars is a compilation of poems by Poet Laureate, Peter Wyton.

The collection contains poems centred around women including a range of themes from violence and discrimination to individual women of historical importance. The poems offer a searingly honest look at violence and abuse balanced by a humorous analysis of femaleness.

'Not all men Are From Mars' is perfect bound and has a cover specially designed by Juliette Percival. The women in this 55 poem collection, some real, some fictional, range from a Holy Roman Empress to a native American princess and include a lollipop lady, a stilt walker, a waitress and many more. Even Madame La Guillotine gets a mention, as does Peter's daughter who was asked to leave a pub [for knitting] and his wife who is exposed on a hillside.

£5 from the sale of each book will be given to Women's Aid to help continue their work to end violence against women and girls.

I'm really pleased to see that this poetry will be used to raise money for Womens Aid and particularly pleased it is written by a man. Over the years, I have always felt that us isolated and frowned-upon feminists would have so much more credibility if the majority of men who despise the behaviour of the misogynist actually got up and spoke out on our behalf, rather than ignoring it. Tabloid people always characterise feminists as dungaree-wearing, short haired and Doc Martened, when, in fact, those people are plumbers.

It shouldn't be a surprise that the wise and witty and well-informed poet of Gloucester has now taken on bigger game - the unholy predicament of abused women. It's good to have a man's point of view on the dominance and cruelty that disfigures some relationships, but the poet in Wyton understands only too painfully the predicament of women. This is not just powerfully written, it's written with great sensitivity and compassion too.

So many women's lives are less than poetic. If Peter Wyton can bring a few verses to our lives and help less fortunate women at the same time then we're on to a win-win situation.

Peter's poetry project for Women's Aid is the best idea. In a society which is more than ever polluted by the grim and violent side of machismo, celebrating women's values is not just a gracious and imaginative gesture, it's an urgent necessity.

I'm delighted to support Peter's initiative for Women's Aid. It's a rare man who has such clear empathy with the female condition and all its myriad, wonderful incarnations. Peter's poems are full of charm and insight, intelligence and humanity.

With my very best wishes
